Roughly 95 percent of the members of the elegant Relais & Chateaux marketing/reservation association are small idyllic hotels in the countryside that serve exquisite food. The former aspect is about to change. An Associated Press report quotes Jaume Tapies, international president of 475-member Relais & Chateaux collection, as saying urban hotels will be a new growth target.
Nearly 30 hotels were added this year around the world, as well as three new countries: Hungary, Macao and Taiwan. Among the new members in the U.S. are the Hotel St. Germain in Dallas and Windham Hill in West Townshend, Vermont. London's iconic Connaught and Rome's Hotel Raphael also gained entry into the select group in 2009. Tapies was quoted as saying that city hotels, like their country cousins, “will be selected for their ability to convey a true sense of place to guest, allowing them to recognize where they in the world they are in a way that chain hotels cannot.”
