Restaurant Chains Register Sales Uptick

Technomic survey also IDs fastest-growing brands


The 500 largest U.S. restaurant chains registered a 1.8 percent increase in annual sales in 2010, according to market researcher Technomic Inc. The firm also indentified the 10 fastest-growing chains with over annual sales over $200 million.

“We are pleased to see improvements in the U.S. economy begin to translate into improved performance for the leading restaurant chains,” said Ron Paul, president of Technomic. “The industry has a lot of ground to recover and still faces many challenges. But our latest findings on 2010 chain performance are certainly encouraging.”

Technomic also identified the 10 fastest-growing large-scale chains, based on the companies' percentage growth in sales in 2010 over 2009. Those firms are:

1] Five Guys Burgers and Fries (38 percent growth)

2] Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwich Shop (22 percent)

3] Chipotle Mexican Grill (21 percent)

4] BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse   (20 percent)

5] Yard House (18 percent)

6] Cheddar's Casual Cafe (14 percent)

7] Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar (14 percent)

8] Firehouse Subs (14 percent)

9] Noodles & Co. (14 percent)

10] Panda Express   (13 percent).
