Restaurateur Ramsay Still in Expansion Mode

(August 2009) posted on Mon Aug 10, 2009 EDT

Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay plans several new restaurants, despite the current economic downturn and a recent bankruptcy scare for his company, The Wall Street Journal reports. Ramsay has just opened a restaurant in Italy and plans another there this month, while in 2010, he plans others in Australia and Qatar.

Ramsay told the Journal the new locales entail less risk because he doesn't own them. He's providing his name, key staff and menu advice in exchange for fees. "I was slightly naive to think" that the ownership model could work anywhere in the world, says Ramsay. Now, he says, "somebody else takes the risk."

As the economy turned sour during the past year or so, Ramsay has had to restructure and downsize his company. He closed the Maze Prague in the Czech Republic and handed back ownership of his restaurants in The London West Hollywood in Los Angeles and the Trianon Palace Versailles in Paris to the hotels they are housed in, though he still supplies the chefs and menus.
