Wasabi by Morimoto, Harbour Bar Get New Looks

Rockwell Group Europe has completed the redesign of two dining destinations at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower Hotel in Mumbai. The Taj's Wasabi by Morimoto restaurant and the Harbour Bar now sport new interiors created by a design team led by Diego Gronda, managing and creative director of the Madrid arm of New York-based Rockwell Group.
“I have always been fascinated by Indian culture and craftsmanship, both of which were great inspirations for our vision,” says Gronda. “Our designs blur the boundaries between modern and traditional to create a sophisticated, cosmopolitan environment.”
The Harbour Bar features art deco furniture and finishes, a center bar made of a solid carved piece of white marble and a back bar framed in cut glass. The renovation also uncovered two historic windows overlooking the harbor, where designers installed a raised seating area.
The Wasabi by Morimoto restaurant features a “magic box” of red lacquer that wraps all the way from the staircase to the entrance of the restaurant. Traditional Japanese motifs pervade the space, such as an installation of drifting cherry blossoms behind the host stand, and crafted joinery on the restaurant walls. The focal points of activity are the freestanding sushi counter and teppanyaki kitchen defined by a large art piece by Indian artist Sadanand Shirke. A private dining room is home to a sculptural round table lit by an overscale custom fixture of hammered metal.
The Taj complex, which opened in 1903, was the site of a major terrorist attack in November 2008. It could not be immediately determined if either of the venues redone by Rockwell Group Europe were damaged at that time.
