W Hotels, Design Miami/Basel name names.

If you’re not tired of hearing, “And the winner is…..” after 2011’s first quarter roll-call of Super Bowl champs (I’m from Wisconsin so, yes, this is meaningful), Grammys, Oscars, Country Music Awards, NCAA championships, etc., check out the 2011 Designers of the Future. Up and comers, these firms are turning out design pieces that would fire up anyone’s creative furnace: UK-based designer Asif Khan, Austrian design team Mischer’Traxler and Studio Juju in Singapore.
A collaboration between W Hotels Worldwide and Design Miami/Basel, the awards celebrate exceptional work by emerging firms doing limited-edition design. Eva Ziegler, global brand leader of W Hotels Worldwide and Le Méridien, says the point of the competition is to look beyond “traditional product and furniture design, seeking work that is truly groundbreaking and innovative.” This year’s competitors drew inspiration from “Conversation Pieces,” the theme set by Design Miami/Basel. The winning firms will present their work at the design fair in Basel in June
But the upside doesn’t stop there. W Hotels doesn’t just give out the trophy. The point is to introduce these unusual pieces in W hotels throughout the world. Last year’s winners Beta Tank, Graham Hudson, rAndom International and Zigelbaum + Coelho set up on-site installations at W Barcelona and W Doha, as well as showing off their work at Istanbul Design week. Zigelbaum + Coelho and rAndom International also displayed their at the W Taipei Premiere Event (W Taipei’s Grand Opening Event) in March 2011; rAndom International created a permanent installation for this hotel. Zigelbaum + Coelho has been commissioned for the W St. Petersburg (the work of architects and designers Antonio Citterio & Partners) Premiere Event in June 2011.
