Spain's Sol Melia hotel chain is trying its hand at the U.S. market. The company, which has 300 hotels in 26 countries, will take over Marriott's 502-key Renaissance Atlanta Hotel Downtown in mid October and rebrand it as the Melia Atlanta.

The company says the property will undergo a $35 million dollar renovation to be completed by 2013, allowing the property to feature proprietary elements of Melia Hotels & Resorts, Sol Melia's largest brand.

“We are thrilled to take over such hotel operations and open the Melia Atlanta,” said Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Sol Melia's co-vice president and ceo. “I believe venturing into this particular market will help with the development of numerous projects the Sol Melia chain wants to develop in the U.S. within the next few years."

In the Americas, Sol Melia currently operates in such countries Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica. Planting its flag in the continental U.S. will allow it to tap the region's key feeder market. In addition, Sol Melia recently sold its Tryp midscale brand to Wyndham Hotel Group, as part of a strategic alliance including a joint development for the new “TRYP by Wyndham” brand within the world's major markets, including the U.S.

Sol Melia's properties operate under the following brands: Gran Melia, Melia, ME by Melia, Innside by Melia, Tryp, Sol, Paradisus and Sol Melia Vacation Club.
