Company plans to focus its efforts on a pair of postponed Riviera Maya resorts

Sol Melia has sold its Paradisus Riviera Cancun Hotel to focus on its plans to build two new resorts in Mexico's Riviera Maya. The Spanish hotel company said it sold the Paradisus property, which includes 496 suites and 14 bungalows, for an undisclosed price to majority shareholder Martinon.

“In times of change we must capitalize on opportunities, focusing on products which exceed the expectations of our guests, especially in the areas of sustainability, and qualitative value,” says Gabriel Escarrer Jaume, Sol Melia's vice chairman and ceo.

The company's two planned developments are Paradisus Playa del Carmen and Paradisus Xaman. The company postponed plans for those developments early last year, due to the global recession, and did not disclose a timetable for opening those properties in its news release on the sale of the Paradisus Riviera Cancun Hotel.

Sol Melia did say the Paradisus Playa del Carmen will have 534 suites, six restaurants, five bars and a signature Gabi Beach Club. The Paradisus Xaman will have 325 suites, five restaurants and four bars, a Gabi Beach Club and a Kid's Zone. Both resorts will share a 20,000-square-foot YHI Spa and Health Club and more than 12,000 square feet of flexible meeting space.
