New NY convention center and hotel complex will be the world’s largest.

By Mary Scoviak

The hospitality industry started off the new year with a bang. After several years of headlines about boutique hotels and mid-tier or budget projects, the Genting Group announced plans for a convention center and hotel complex on the site of New York City’s Aqueduct racetrack that will be the biggest facility of its kind in the world. As we reported, in his State of the State address on Wednesday, Gov. Cuomo endorsed the Malaysia-based company’s plan to build a $4 billion, 3.8 million-square-foot center with 3000 hotel rooms in Queens. It will replace the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan (where BDNY was held last year).

While one swallow doesn’t make a summer, the Aqueduct project does point to several nascent trends. First, it represents part of the first wave of Asian capital, which the industry has been anticipating for a while.Secondly, with the recession easing, companies have realized how much trade shows and face-to-face networking matter—which explains the sold-out vendor space and increased attendance at BDNY 2011.

Big boxes won’t dominate any firm’s project list, but the focus on large-scale conference business looks set to continue to create at least a minor wave through the hospitality industry. Our Fall 2012 issue will take a more in-depth look at some of the properties that merge chic and functional with a superhuman scale. And, if your firm is one of the ones with a multi-hundred-room commission on the books, we’d love to hear from you!
