Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc. has announced plans to open 80-100 new-build and conversion hotels in 2010. The company, which opened 83 properties in 2009, said about 70 percent of this year's openings will be outside of North America, with the majority in Asia Pacific.
Starwood's biggest growth market for 2010 will be China, where it expects to open 30 additional properties. Those openings will include both The Luxury Collection and W brands' first hotels in mainland China. In addition, The St. Regis, Westin, Le Meridien and Four Points by Sheraton brands will also increase their Chinese presence in 2010.
“China is expected to be one of the world's largest outbound tourism markets by 2020, with a predicted 100 million outbound trips a year,” said Simon Turner, Starwood's president of global development. “As the Chinese travel, they are going to stay with the brands they know from home, which will have a meaningful effect on our business globally and underscores our focus there.”
Overall, Starwood said its upper upscale and luxury brands will account for more than 60 percent of its openings in 2010. The company, which currently has 982 properties worldwide, expects to open its 1,000th property globally during the year.
