Westin goes eco-friendly while Sheraton focuses on a modern residential ambiance.
Starwood Hotels & Resorts is rolling out fresh, brand-driven guest room design concepts for new build and renovated Sheraton and Westin hotels worldwide. These new room schemes are about more than good looks. They are a response to extensive in-room behavior research “which indicated a designer for a greater level of stylish functionality,” says a Starwood spokesperson.
Led by Erin Hoover, vice president of design, Starwood's team is using natural elements and neutral colors for the Art Deco-inspired Westin Classic and cleanly linear Westin Modern guest rooms. The intent is “to bring to life the brand's philosophy of preserving wellness on the road in three dimensions and evoke a sense of balance,” according to Starwood officials. For Sheraton, the design team plays up this international flag's history as a global industry icon. New guest room designs use rich color palettes and strong accent shades to marry heritage references with modern takes classic herringbone, basket-weave and geometric patterns.
There's also fun in functionality such as: A custom Westin-designed accent table that folds out to fit a room-service tray or laptop, and folds closed to occupy a smaller space. (With a quick flip the multi-use table can serve as a working area for an impromptu laptop session or transform into an intimate table for in-room dining); a custom Sheraton-designed bedside tables with built-in outlets that face beds, facilitating easy computer and electronics charging use; an expanded Westin closet includes shelves and the mini bar, freeing valuable room space and reducing clutter; a Westin upholstered bench that can double as a luggage rack and is easily stored under the television console and oversized signature Sheraton armchairs with ottomans stored beneath seats, creating additional living area space.
Sheraton rooms' LED nightlight enables guests to find their way in an unfamiliar space without turning on the lights and the new Westin rooms that incorporate strategically-placed, adjustable LED reading lights in the headboard.
