Survey: Global Hotel Room Rates on Rise

(March 2011) posted on Wed Mar 23, 2011 EDT

But last year's levels still only equal those of 2004

The average cost of a hotel room around the world rose 2 percent in 2010, according to Hotels.com’s Hotel Price Index (HPI), that measure’s first year-on-year increase since 2007. But because room rates fell so low during 2009—dropping 13 percent—the average room price last year was still only equal to those of 2004.

“After the worst trading conditions most in the market had seen, the 2010 story shows a market in recovery,” says David Roche, president of Hotels.com, a unit of the Expedia group.

Hotels.com’s HPI is based on bookings made on Hotels.com and tracks the real prices paid per hotel room (rather than advertised rates) for 110,000 hotels across more than 18,000 locations around the world.
