Tropicana Las Vegas Inc. has hired Thomas McCartney as president of the resort/casino, effective December 14. McCartney, whose career includes stints at Planet Hollywood, MGM Mirage and Caesars World, will oversee property operations as the Tropicana Las Vegas undergoes a $125 million renovation and rebranding.

W Hotels Worldwide has appointed Jim McPartlin as general manager of the new W Hotel & Residences in Hollywood, Calif.

Viceroy Hotel Group has named Cheryl Bennett vice president of travel industry sales.

OPENINGS/RENOVATIONS/BRAND NEWS

Hyatt Hotels & Resorts has opened the 491-key Grand Hyatt Shenzhen in China.

Hard Rock International and Palace Resorts have reached an agreement to rebrand the 1,800-room Moon Palace Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, as a Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in spring 2010.

Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort located off the coast of Antigua, has reopened after undergoing a $28 million upgrade that included the addition of a Sense spa, 28 new suites, and two new restaurants.

Construction has started on a 20-story JW Marriott hotel in Baku, Azerbaijan that was designed by London-based ReardonSmith. The 228-key property is slated for completion in 2011.

Thompson Hotels has been named manager of Hotel Sax Chicago, a 353-room property owned by LaSalle Hotel Properties.

BUSINESS BRIEFS

Hunter Douglas Inc., a manufacturer and marketer of custom window fashions, announced its recent victory in the patent-infringement lawsuit of Ren Judkins versus HT Window Coverings. Hunter Douglas, a licensee of Judkins (an independent inventor), funded the litigation in the Federal District Court of Western Pennsylvania against HT Window Coverings. The infringing products, of cellular fabric construction, were manufactured in Taiwan by Teh Yor Co. Ltd. The jury unanimously found willful infringement of one of the patents and infringement of the other patent.

LG Electronics Canada has introduced LG Concierge Advantage, a customized digital signage solution for the Canadian lodging, hospitality, health care and retail sectors.

Material ConneXion has named the Concrete Cloth, by U.K.-based Concrete Canvas, winner of its first annual MEDIUM Award for Material of the Year. Honorable mentions went to: Abtech Industries's Smart Sponge technology; Objet Geometries' Connex 3D Multiple Material Printers; Arkema's Pebax Rnew eco-friendly elastomer; Cellucomp's Curran, a high-strength biofiber; Milliken Chemical's Millad NX8000; Innegrity's Innegra S fiber; Momentive's Performance Materials's LSR 7070; OCTAMOLD Technologies's OCTAMOLD; Keil Gmbh's Xylogramm; and Vestige Veneer's Infigure and Quin Arts & Media Science's metal architectural surfaces.

Joseph Pettipas, HOK's senior vice president and western practice leader, received the IIDA Leadership Award of Excellence from the Association of Registered Interior Designers of Ontario and the International Interior Design Association.

The Wave, Muscat, an integrated resort and residential development in Oman, won the Best International Architecture Award in the recent CNBC International Property Awards. The complex was designed by Triad Oman Consultants International, Meletitiki and ER International.

Tom's Bar, in the Augustine  Hotel, Prague, took top honors in the “Best Café, Nightclub or Lounge” category in the European Hotel Design Awards program. Interior designer RDD Plc. created the bar.
