Grand Princess, Crystal Serenity to be updated
Two high-profile cruise ships are slated to get major updates this spring. First up will be work on Princess Cruises' 13-year-old Grand Princess, which will undergo a 24-day makeover. The ship, which was the prototype for the line's “Grand Class” vessels, will receive many of Princess' trademark features introduced since the ship's 1998 debut, including the signature Piazza atrium. Several new features will be also be added to the ship, including a tea lounge/library called Leaves and Alfredo's, a full-service pizzeria showcasing this renowned Princess dish.
A new nightclub called One5, inspired by its deck location, will be created on the top deck of the ship, replacing its Skywalkers Nightclub, which has given the ship its distinctive profile. Skywalkers will be removed from its 18th deck perch, with its replacement located on deck 15. Princess Cruises officials say this change will significantly improve the operational performance of the ship, including greater fuel efficiency.
“This is the largest makeover we've ever undertaken for any of our ships,” said Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises' executive vice president. “When Grand Princess was launched she was the most innovative ship at sea, and now we're adding some of the later innovations we introduced on subsequent ships.”
The updates to the Grand Princess will be made during a drydock from April 11 to May 4 at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas. Slated to get underway a few weeks after that is Crystal Cruises' $25 million makeover of its Crystal Serenity.
Crystal Cruises said that update will include makeovers of its 531 deluxe staterooms, penthouses and penthouses Suites, as well as a new look for its retail centers and outdoor pool deck. The work is slated to take place during a 14-day period in May in dry dock at Hamburg's Blohm + Voss shipyard.
The ship's interiors are being created by II BY IV Design Associates. Keith Rushbrook, principal at that Toronto-based firm, said the updated ship will feature “modern classic elegance. We wanted Fifth Avenue – creme de la creme New York-inspired living and retail spaces that people love and look forward to spending time in.”
