Carlson and Choice ramp up their expansion plans in the Asian subcontinent
Two major U.S.-based hotel chains are detailing their expansion plans for India, the world's second most-populous country. Minneapolis-based Carlson Hotels Worldwide, which already operates 28 properties in India, plans to add 50 more by the end of 2012 across four brands – Radisson Hotels & Resorts, Country Inns & Suites, Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts and Park Inn. “We are optimistic about India and its growth prospects as a leading emerging economy," said Hubert Joly, Carlson's president and ceo. Those expansion plans will make Carlson's the largest and fastest-growing international hotel operator in India by number of hotels, Joly added.
As part of its expansion plans in India, Carlson announced it has signed an agreement to increase its stake in RHW Hotel Management Services Ltd (RHW) from 13 percent to 87 percent. RHW is the hotel management and consultancy services company which has managed Carlson-branded hotels in India since 1998.
In a similar vein, Choice Hotels International Inc. announced that it has agreed to acquire the remaining 60 percent ownership interest in Choice Hospitality (India) Ltd. Choice Hospitality India serves as the master partner and franchisor of Choice's hotel brands in India. "We plan to focus extensive development resources on growing our presence in India, which now stands at 28 hotels," said Stephen Joyce, president and ceo of Silver Spring, Md.-based Choice. "India is an extremely important key market for our global growth and we're looking forward to the great development potential that it holds for our brands and our hotels."
