U.S. Hotels' RevPAR Fell in September

(October 2008) posted on Wed Oct 22, 2008 EDT

The U.S. hotel industry's revenue per available room (RevPAR) fell into the red during September, according to data from Smith Travel Research. "The U.S. lodging industry faced a challenging third quarter, with RevPAR growth moving into negative territory [dropping by 1.1 percent] for the first time since second quarter 2003," said Bobby Bowers, STR's senior vice president of operations. "We expect a continued difficult operating environment in the final quarter of 2008. Room supply growth will continue while demand growth (room nights sold) likely will remain soft in many markets, driven by slowing economic growth."
