River-cruise ship to feature fuel-efficient propulsion system

Viking River Cruises said its second state-of-the-art “green” ship, the Viking Prestige, will embark on its inaugural European voyage in July. The 188-passenger Prestige will be the second member of the company’s fleet of river-cruise ships to use a fuel-efficient, hybrid propulsion system. That system offers a smoother, quieter ride than conventional ships, Viking says.

Viking Prestige will mark the first ship in our fleet-expansion program which will see four Viking Longships in 2012 followed by another three each in 2013 and 2014, for a total of 10 new ships in three years,” said Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking River Cruises.

The Prestige will feature all-outside staterooms and French balconies on its upper and middle decks, along with an upscale interior décor created by Norwegian maritime architects Yran & Storbraaten, designers of vessels for such companies as The Yachts of Seabourn, Oceania and Disney.
