(May 2010) posted on Fri May 28, 2010 EDT

First new vessels will debut in 2011

Viking River Cruises will build out its 18-vessel fleet with eight new ships. The $250 million expansion program kicks off with next year's launch of the Viking Prestige, which premiers in Europe, and the Viking Emerald, which sets sail in China. Additional vessels will join the European fleet in 2012 and 2013. Two ships already in the portfolio, Viking Schumann and Viking Pakhomov, are scheduled for major refurbishments.

“Over the past decade, Viking has established river cruising as a mainstream means of travel,” said Torstein Hagen, the company's chairman in a corporate statement. “At the same time, we believe river cruising is still in its infancy and has tremendous growth potential.”
