W Hotels Worldwide has opened its 30th property worldwide, the W Fort Lauderdale and The Residences at W Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The W Fort Lauderdale's two-tower exterior is designed to resemble a sailboat, a reflection of the city's boating culture. The 517-room hotel's broad pedestals represent the hull while the two towers form white opposing "sails" which in boating terms means to "come about" or change direction, representative of Fort Lauderdale's recent rebirth as an upscale destination. The interiors of the W Fort Lauderdale were created by New York-based designer Clodagh, whose efforts included the creation of 230 custom furniture pieces with fabrics and finishes inspired by the shimmering sands, pounding surf and the infinite variation of colors found on nearby seashells. Clodagh also designed the property's Whiskey Blue, a nightlife venue by the Gerber Group. The W complex also houses restaurateur Stephen Starr's Steak 954, designed by Paris-based Gilles & Boissier, and Florida's first Bliss Spa.
