Rockwell Group, Softroom design latest “pod” hotel
Yotel, the “pod” hotel concept from Europe, will open its first non-airport locale this June in New York. The Yotel New York, at West 42nd Street and 10th Avenue in Times Square West, will feature 669 cabins.
The hotel was designed by Rockwell Group and Softroom, based on a concept conceived by YO! Founder Simon Woodroffe and realized by Yotel ceo Gerard Greene. “A solution to expensive and boring hotels, I wanted YOTEL to use innovative radical design to create a mixture of luxury, fun, comfort and excitement at an affordable price, turning the hotel industry on its head,” says Greene.
The Yotel New York will feature a check-in utilizing airline-style kiosks, a robotic luggage-storage system and rooms with space-saving movable beds. Most of the rooms will have 170 sq. ft. of space, but there will also be 21 larger cabins and suites with private outdoor terraces and hot tubs. In addition, the hotel will feature 18,000 sq. ft. of flexible work and entertainment space and Dohyo, a Japanese restaurant.
Yotel launched in 2007 with locales inside London’s Gatwick south terminal and London's Heathrow Airport terminal 4. A third member of the brand opened in 2008 in the airside transit area at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. Plans for the Yotel New York were first unveiled more than a year ago.
